Building the case for change

Before diving into procedures and protocols, the program needed to help learners genuinely understand why fumigation stewardship matters. Ozemio anchored the learning experience in the scale of the problem itself: roughly a quarter to a third of the world's grain crop is lost every year during storage, largely due to pest infestation, globally. Insects alone outnumber all other animal species combined by roughly seven times, and by biomass, by about three times over other animals. Left unmanaged, pests represent a direct and material threat to stored crops, to the businesses that depend on them, and to global food security.

Layered onto this is a tightening regulatory landscape; nations around the world are enforcing stricter rules on pesticide use, permissible limits, and residue tolerances. This creates real pressure on product owners, traders, and shippers, who need reliable, defensible ways to protect their stored goods without falling foul of compliance requirements.

Ozemio used this two-sided narrative- the biological threat of pests and the regulatory pressure around pesticide use- as the logical entry point of the program. It reframed fumigation training as a critical skill that protects crops, careers, and compliance simultaneously.

Structuring the learning journey

Working closely with the client's stewardship and technical teams, Ozemio designed a two-module, ten-part curriculum, structured to take learners from foundational concepts to applied, scenario-specific practice:

Bringing the content to life

To make dense, technical material approachable for a global, non-expert audience, Ozemio introduced Dr. Plant, a guide avatar who walks learners through the stationary and in-transit fumigation processes in Module 2. This gave the program a consistent, friendly voice that could simplify complex procedural steps, reduce cognitive load, and make repeated engagement with technical content feel more natural.

Key design principles included:

Progressive complexity: starting with vocabulary, pest biology, and units of measure before introducing equipment and procedural safety.
Visual and scenario-driven explanations: using equipment visuals, process walkthroughs, and step-by-step breakdowns rather than dense text blocks.
Consistent terminology: standardizing definitions and units globally so every warehouse team, regardless of region, speaks the same technical language.
Safety-first sequencing: ensuring safety procedures were reinforced before and alongside equipment and process training, not as an afterthought.
Global scalability: building the modules to be easily deployable and consistent across every warehouse location the client operates.
