With aircraft pilots and flight engineers ranking fifth in OSHA's top ten most dangerous jobs, health and safety training in the aviation industry is more important than ever. While many systems are in place to prevent and minimize workplace injury for all aviation staff, without proper training and awareness these systems can and do fail often enough for these jobs to still be incredibly dangerous professions. Effective training can ensure policies are followed and systems are obeyed and reinforced.  Employees can also often see safety systems that they are not properly trained on as hindrances to productivity, especially in highly competitive work cultures where there is a lot of pressure to succeed, and employers need to educate their teams on how and why these safety restrictions are important to protect both employees and customers.  Ultimately there are three major things that good health and safety training does that ensures companies can minimize risks, and the costs associated with them, both from loss of productivity and from reimbursement.  Health and Safety training helps enforce rules  Health and safety training builds awareness of systems in place, the penalties for them, and the reasons they exist in the first place. In this way, they serve to both educate employees about rules and justify those policies so employees self-regulate and help remind their colleagues about policies set in place to prevent workplace accidents, ensure proper safety measures are followed, and proper safety gear is used on the job.  Health and Safety training helps create accountability  While a new policy can often see a surge in adherence to health and safety protocols, these can quickly fall off as time passes and employees grow laxer in favour of "more important" objectives like meeting productivity targets. While productivity is important, short-term gains at the cost of risking a workplace injury and having that employee need time off to recover can often nullify the reason they were skirting the rules in the first place! To avoid these shortcuts, regular health and safety training creates accountability and reminds employees at regular intervals that these policies exist for a reason and that adhering to them protects employees from often easily-avoidable suffering. Most workplace accidents are not a result of inadequate policy, but of employees refusing to follow, or not being aware of, policies that are already in place! This makes training incredibly important in ensuring these policies are adhered to.  Health and Safety training creates standardization  Some employees regularly check their work emails and stay up-to-date with every mailer, every town hall, and every weekly update. For most, though, these emails will often sit unread, or be unceremoniously deleted, especially when these employees are busy and always on the move. Building a regimen that pushes regular eLearning sessions can dramatically improve the standardization with which information can be distributed through your workforce. A robust LMS (learning management system) can be a great way to make that easy to manage and maintain, and with a regular influx of new content, teams can be prepared for new situations and kept informed of the importance of health and safety, as well as other reminders like technical or customer-facing training or review modules.  Ozemio has helped many companies in dozens of industries, including aviation, automobiles, construction, machinery, and manufacturing, to create eLearning systems, both single- and multi-module programs for Health and Safety training, Environmental Sustainability training, technical training, sales and service training, and much more.
