Seven Simple Ways to
Boost Engagement with L&D

For leaders in learning and development, empowering your workforce isn’t a “nice to have.” In today’s world, an empowered employee is linked to better job performance. When your workforce is skilled and motivated, they’re more equipped and emboldened to tackle challenges.

So, how do you build a work culture of empowerment and enablement? One that highlights individual strengths and prepares your employees for the future?

Here are seven techniques to help you succeed!

1. Lighten Up

Who says learning has to be boring or super serious? Get a little creative with your content and its format. Sitcoms regularly outperform other tv show formats because they’re funny. Just be careful to use humor responsibly and intentionally to meet your learning objectives.

2. Make it Short

Long training sessions can be overwhelming. TikTok has over 2 billion users consuming content a minute (or less) at a time. Why not follow their example and break your content into small, easy-to-digest pieces? When you mix in regular boosters that encourage knowledge and skill recall, your employees stay engaged, leading to better retention.

3. Be Interactive

Include activities like quizzes, simulations, and role-playing! These interactive tools give employees hands-on practice, especially with digital skills. Practicing in a safe environment builds their confidence to handle real challenges.

4. Get Personal

Everyone learns differently, so why treat all your employees the same? Personalizing learning paths to match each employee’s role and skills creates a more engaging experience. And now with AI, it’s easier to embrace your employee’s unique persona (their experience, LMS transcript, LXP usage, etc.). When learning feels relevant, your employees are more likely to finish their courses and perform better overall. And a big part of relevance is subjective.

5. Be Social

We learn best when we learn together! Like forums and peer discussions, social learning helps people share ideas and grow. This approach not only makes learning more fun but also strengthens teamwork. Platforms like Slack and Teams make this easy so L&D can curate without getting in the way. Don't forget about the other 90% of that 70/20/10 model.

6. Get Real

Learning sticks better when it’s practical! Let your employees use new skills right away by assigning real tasks after training. This hands-on method builds their confidence and helps them see the value of what they’ve learned. And it’s a great way to reinforce the formal training through their leader. See above about that 70/20/10 model.

7. Celebrate

Don’t forget to celebrate achievements! Recognizing your employees with certificates, shoutouts, and rewards makes them feel appreciated. This boosts their morale, encourages them to keep learning, and inspires their co-workers to do the same.

Companies embracing employee empowerment enjoy numerous benefits. When employees connect with their organization’s core values and beliefs and are given the freedom to grow within that framework, the entire organization progresses together. This alignment fosters a sense of unity and drives collective success.
